A's clip Mariners in 10th
Baseball Betting Lines
05/19/2010 -
Oakland, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Kurt Suzuki's two-out RBI single in the bottom
of the 10th inning gave the Athletics a 6-5 win in a back-and-forth battle
with the Seattle Mariners in the finale of a two-game set.
Suzuki came up with runners on first and third with two down in the 10th and
knocked a fastball up the middle past the sprawling Matt Tuiasosopo for the
game-winning hit.
Jack Cust drove in two runs for the A's, who have won two straight after
dropping five in a row.
Ben Sheets allowed four runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings, while Craig
Breslow (1-1) picked up the win after tossing a scoreless 10th.
Casey Kotchman finished 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Mariners, who have
dropped four straight and six of seven.
Felix Hernandez gave up three runs on 11 hits in six frames, and Brandon
League (3-4) was saddled with the loss after allowing the game-winner in 1 1/3
innings of work.
Daric Barton doubled with one out in the first, moved to third on Ryan
Sweeney's single and scored on Suzuki's base hit for a 1-0 A's lead.
Rob Johnson tied the affair with a one-out solo blast to left in the third,
but the A's came right back to score two on Cust's two-out single to right in
the bottom of the frame. Sweeney and Suzuki scored on the play after reaching
on back-to-back one-out hits.
Seattle tied the game in the sixth. Chone Figgins led off with a double
followed by a Franklin Gutierrez walk. Both advanced a base on Jose Lopez's
flyout to left and scored on Kotchman's single off the wall in right. Kotchman
was tagged out trying to reach second on the play.
The Mariners took the lead in the seventh. Josh Wilson singled and stole
second. After consecutive outs and an Ichiro Suzuki intentional walk, Figgins
lined a single to left to plate the go-ahead run.
But the A's rallied to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Sweeney
singled off Kanekoa Teixeira, moved to second when Kurt Suzuki was hit by a
pitch and scored on Kevin Kouzmanoff's single off Sean White. After Cust
struck out, Eric Chavez nailed a sac fly to deep center for a 5-4 A's edge.
Seattle tied the game at five in the top of the eighth as pinch-hitter Mike
Sweeney drove home Ken Griffey Jr. with a one-out sac fly off Andrew Bailey.

Oddsmakers have released the odds for the 2009 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Aaron Curry has been made the opening favorite.
Bet on NFL Football
Seattle took Curry with the fourth overall pick in April's NFL draft and plan on inserting him into its starting lineup right away. The Hawks traded linebacker Julian Peterson in the offseason, so Curry is expected to have a significant role in Seattle's defense next year and that's one of the primary reasons he is the favorite to win the NFL ROY Award.
Oddsmakers from online sportsbook MySportsbook.com have made Curry a 5/1 favorite to win this year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Given that he was the best defensive prospect in this year's draft and how he'll have plenty of opportunities to make plays in '09, Curry offers a ton of value at 5/1.
Another thing working for Curry is the position he plays. A linebacker has won the defensive ROY award six straight times and eight of the last nine years. Jerod Mayo, Patrick Willis, DeMeco Ryans, Shawne Merriman, Jonathan Vilma, Terrell Suggs, Kendrell Bell and Brian Urlacher were the most recent linebackers to take home the award.
Following Curry at 5/1 are Tyson Jackson (Chiefs) at 7/1, James Laurinaitas (Rams) at 8/1, Brian Orakpo (Redskins) at 10/1, Rey Maualuga (Bengals) at 10/1 and Jerry Peria (Falcons) at 10/1.
All the players mentioned above are expected to start for their respective teams, but Jackson and Peria are going to have a tough time being recognized on a national level given they're both defensive linemen. D-linemen rarely put up the numbers that it takes to win an individual award like the ROY.
A couple of players with some value are Clay Matthews (Packers) at 12/1 and Larry English (Chargers) at 15/1. Matthews is expected to start at outside linebacker in Green Bay's new 3-4 defense and could rack up a ton of tackles. English, who was an impressive player at Northern Illinois, is expected to be a situational pass rusher for the Chargers and could rack up a ton of sacks.
