Clippers pay a visit to Hawks

Basketball Betting Lines

02/03/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Coming off a brief but disappointing road trip, the Atlanta Hawks head back to the friendly confines of Philips Arena for tonight's clash with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Atlanta dropped both tests of a two-game trek that began with Saturday's 104-86 loss at rival Orlando, which vaulted the Magic over the Hawks for first place in the Southeast Division. That lead has since been extended to two games after Atlanta came up on the short end of Tuesday's 106-99 decision against Oklahoma City.

The Hawks fell to the Thunder despite a 37-point night out of Joe Johnson, with the All-Star swingman making good on 13-of-20 field goal attempts. Josh Smith tallied 15 points and six boards in the loss, and the 24-year-old became the youngest player in league history to record 1,000 career blocks during the game.

Johnson and Mike Bibby drained back-to-back three-pointers near the midway point of the fourth quarter to tie the score at 89-89, but Oklahoma City countered with a 15-6 burst and led the rest of the way.

"We weren't too flat, but we just couldn't get stops," Hawks head coach Mike Woodson remarked afterward.

A return home could very well enable Atlanta to break out of its funk. The Hawks are an outstanding 19-5 at Philips Arena in 2009-10 and have won seven of their last eight outings as the host.

The Clippers are a poor 7-18 away from home for the season, but the team is fresh off an encouraging road victory at Chicago last night. Eric Gordon led Los Angeles with 24 points in the 90-82 win, with Chris Kaman contributing 21 points and 11 rebounds in his first game back from an ankle sprain that sidelined him for the club's past two tilts.

Los Angeles held the Bulls to just 38 percent shooting from the field and forced 19 turnovers in halting a stretch of four straight losses.

"I thought our defense was really good," Clippers head coach Mike Dunleavy said.

The Clippers will be ending a season-long eight-game road trip tonight and have gone 2-5 thus far on the swing.

Atlanta has won four of the last six meetings in this series, but Los Angeles dealt the Hawks a lopsided 121-97 defeat in its lone visit to Philips Arena last season. Al Thornton led the Clippers with 31 points in that game, the worst home loss for Atlanta in over three years.
