Cremins taking medical leave of absenceNCAA Basketball Betting Lines01/27/2012 - Charleston, SC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - College of Charleston men's basketball coach Bobby Cremins announced Friday that he is taking a medical leave of absence. Per Cremins' request, associate head coach Mark Byington has been named interim head coach. Cremins is in his sixth season as head coach of the Cougars and has guided them to a 125-68 record, including a 12-8 mark this season. The former Georgia Tech coach is among the top 15 active coaches in career victories. "Being able to come back and coach at the College of Charleston has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life," Cremins said in a statement. "I hope everybody will continue to support our team and Mark." College of Charleston president George Benson said he understands Cremins' decision and that the coach "must do what's best for his health." "Given how much Bobby loves coaching and how committed he is to his players, his coaching staff, and the college, I know this was a very difficult decision for him," said Benson. The Cougars are in the midst of a three-game losing streak, falling to 4-5 in Southern Conference play. Byington will debut as interim head coach when they host Wofford on Saturday afternoon. He has been Cremins' top assistant for the past six years.
