Cubs to place Zambrano on restricted list
Baseball Betting Lines
06/28/2010 -
Chicago, IL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Chicago Cubs will place pitcher Carlos
Zambrano on the restricted list and he will not rejoin the team until after
the All-Star break.
Zambrano was ordered to undergo evaluation picked by representatives from
Major League Baseball and its players union.
The move comes in the wake of his actions during Friday's game against the
White Sox. After allowing four runs in the first inning of an eventual 6-0
loss, Zambrano was visibly upset and got in a heated exchange with teammate
Derrek Lee in the Cubs' dugout. The outburst ended with an overturned cooler
and spelled the end of Zambrano's outing, as Tom Gorzelanny was on the mound
at the start of the second.
After the game, the Cubs announced the suspension for the fiery right-hander,
who was making his fifth start since being reinserted into the rotation. That
suspension is expected to end on Tuesday, when his time on the restricted list
will begin. That will allow Zambrano to get paid while he undergoes
evaluation.
For the season, Zambrano has compiled a 3-6 record and has pitched to a 5.66
earned-run average in 22 games -- nine starts.
The 29-year-old was also suspended six games last season by Major League
Baseball after an in-game incident saw him initiate contact with an umpire,
launch a baseball into left field and take a bat to a Gatorade bucket.
