Conley and Grizzlies grab win in New Orleans
Basketball Betting Lines
03/04/2010 -
New Orleans, LA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Mike Conley finished with 26 points and
seven assists, as the Memphis Grizzlies pulled out a 104-100 victory over the
New Orleans Hornets.
Zach Randolph added 23 points and 11 rebounds for Memphis, which had lost its
last nine on the road against the Hornets.
Marcus Thornton scored 24 points off the bench to lead the Hornets, who have
lost three in a row. Darren Collison added 17 points and 14 assists, and Peja
Stojakovic provided 18 points and nine boards.
David West finished with 15 points for New Orleans, and his dunk with 11.5
seconds left got the Hornets within 102-100. Conley missed two free throws at
the other end with 10.7 still on the clock, giving New Orleans a chance to
tie.
James Posey got control of the ball and raced up the right side of the court
before being confronted by Memphis' Marcus Williams. Posey somewhat
haphazardly tossed a pass backward, in the direction of three Grizzlies
players. Rudy Gay grabbed the ball and dunked as the clock ran out to seal
Memphis' win.
"I knew we didn't have any timeouts, and when he missed the second one, I
drove up the sideline," Posey said. "I saw Marcus had stopped and saw Peja.
Then I thought I had penetrated far enough to have a kick back and Rudy Gay
intercepted it. We were able to come back and still have a chance to win. We
weren't able to pull this one out and that hurts."
The Hornets' loss came after they led by nine approaching the midway point of
the fourth quarter. But Memphis rallied over the next few minutes to even the
game, as Conley hit a jumper before converting a three-point play with 4:37 on
the clock, making it an 88-88 game.
It was close down the stretch, and with 1:20 left, Randolph banked in a three
from the top of the arc with the shot clock running down, putting Memphis on
top 96-95.
"We were down nine points in the fourth and we just kept battling," said
Memphis head coach Lionel Hollins. "Mike Conley had a huge game, he kept
attacking the basket and Zach played outstanding as well."
Collison missed a layup before Conley got his floater to bounce in with 26.4
seconds left, and after Collison was again unsuccessful on a drive, Randolph
sank two free throws for a 100-95 edge with 17.4 to play.
Stojakovic was fouled on a three-pointer on the Hornets' next touch and made
all his free throws to keep the Hornets close.
Memphis held a 29-24 edge after one quarter and was ahead 54-51 at the break.
The Hornets grabbed a 76-74 edge moving to the fourth, and used an eight-point
burst to take an 88-79 lead with 6:24 to play.
Game Notes
The Grizzlies hadn't defeated the Hornets in New Orleans since March 16,
2005. They had also lost 10 of the last 11 meetings with New Orleans
overall...The Hornets shot 50 percent and made 13-of-13 free throws...The
Grizzlies went 24-of-38 at the foul line.

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship. Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92. After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points. Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1. Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years. With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed. UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern. Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier. OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak. Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four. It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta. But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.

“You play to win the game!”
Those are the words of notoriously intense head coach Herman Edwards. Unfortunately, from a bettors’ perspective, most coaches don’t feel that way about the NFL preseason. August is a time to evaluate young players, finalize the depth chart and pray your star players stay healthy.
The trick to making money during the exhibition schedule is identifying coaches – like Edwards – who can’t stand losing even when there's nothing on the line.
The New York Jets betting won 15 of 21 preseason games and went 14-7 against the spread (ATS) during Edwards’s five-year tenure with the club. In his first season as the Kansas City Chiefs field boss, the team improved from 0-4 to 2-2.
Identifying win-a-holics like Edwards is a good start if you plan betting the preseason – even though most say you shouldn’t ... but what the hell do they know anyway?
Here’s a brief rundown of two teams that have a habit of winning during the second-stringers’ season, and another club that has a good chance of exceeding this year.
New York Giants betting lines
Playing in the media hub of North America can be stressful but the press can’t write anything negative about the way Tom Coughlin’s boys play in the preseason. The Giants won and covered all four games last summer, improving their record to 7-1 both straight up (SU) and against the spread over the last two years.
Coughlin has shown he’s not afraid to give his starters more time in the second preseason game than most of his colleagues, no doubt one of the reasons his team has been so dominant.
Dallas Cowboys betting lines
Bettors can count on America’s team early on. The Cowboys are 14-6 both SU and ATS since 2002 in warm-up contests. Former coach Bill Parcells, the coach of the team the last four years, has an intimidating, in-your-face presence – surely a reason Dallas has had so much early success.
The Big Tuna won’t be strolling the sidelines with looks of disgust, but new coach Wade Phillips will be anxious to make a good first impression for owner Jerry Jones.
Dallas plays the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos before things get serious. They then face the Houston Texans in their third contest (the game starters see most game time) and finish off with the Minnesota Vikings.
Expect a Dallas team able to walk away with another 3-1 preseason record.
Oakland Raiders betting lines
This team scored a league-worst 12 offensive touchdowns last season, so the rookies and veterans each have something to prove. There’s a bounty of first-unit jobs up for grabs and plenty of bodies competing for those slots.
First-time head coach Lane Kiffin will be eager to impress an owner who employs the philosophy, “Just win, baby!”
The 32-year-old Kiffin has to command respect from a locker room full of players older than him. All of these factors should lead to purpose in preseason.
Don’t forget: before playing like a team that belonged in NFL Europe, Oakland went 4-1 (both SU and ATS) in exhibition games.
